Role of TIG Welding in Bloom Energy's Manufacturing
- High-Precision Components: Bloom Energy uses TIG welding to fabricate structural frames, sheet metal housings, heat exchangers, and gas distribution manifolds for their fuel cell servers.
- Specialized Materials: The manufacturing process frequently involves welding thin-gauge stainless steels, nickel alloys (such as Inconel), and aluminum. TIG welding provides the precise heat control needed to prevent warping or burning through these materials.
- Leak-Tight Sealing: Because fuel cell systems transport hydrogen, natural gas, or biogas, welds must pass strict non-destructive leak testing (such as helium leak detection or pressure testing) to prevent gas escape.
- Pulse & Manual TIG Techniques: Welders at Bloom Energy utilize standard DC TIG and pulsed-TIG processes, working with precision jigs, holding fixtures, and assembly blueprints.
